programmable rf over fiber

Our participation in IMS2024 was a great success!

In June, we participated for the first time in IMS2024. The IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium is a yearly event. This year, it took place in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC, offering exhibitors a chance to connect with 9,000+ members of the RF and Microwave community from across the globe.

At our booth, we showcased our RFoF & ODL solutions for Electronic Warfare & Radar, 5G testing, and DAS applications, attracting many visitors. We received visitors from all over the world representing government agencies, major system integrators, and commercial enterprises active in the 5G cellular, satcom, broadcast, government & defense, testing & measuring, and Electronic Warfare & Radar industries.

We talked to more than 100 visitors who left their details to be contacted after the show, which resulted in sending out several proposals for RFoF solutions.

Our live demo got a lot of attention from interested parties, who asked our experts detailed questions.

The show also gave us a good opportunity to meet some of our distributors to catch up. We had meetings with representatives from Municom GmbH, our distributor for Central Europe, Fusoh Shoji Co., Ltd. from Japan, Amtele Communication, our distributor for Scandinavia, Matech from France, and Mitron from China.

The show demonstrated that there is a growing demand for the type of RF over Fiber subsystems and solutions that we, as RFOptic, offer.

Our next participation in an international exhibition will be at the upcoming European Microwave Exhibition. EuMW 2024 will take place during September 24-26 in the Paris Convention Center, 1 place de la Porte de Versailles 75015 Paris. At the event, we will co-exhibit in booth 422b of the company MATECH. We will showcase our advanced solutions for RFoF & ODL solutions for Electronic Warfare & Radar5G testing, and DAS applications. RFOptic’s RFoF for GPS Applications

GPS signals have to be transferred from the antenna to a control room in mobile networks architecture. Sometimes, the physical distances are more than a few kilometers which preclude the use of coax cable due to high loss. Minimal fiber infrastructure drives mobile companies to use the same infrastructure for GPS and digital signals using WDM technologies.

The GPSoF solution of RFOptic allows signals to be carried from an antenna to a GPS receiver over fiber with minimal signal degradation. The GPSoF connection operates at low signal levels, e.g., directly from the antenna to the network in case of GPS. The Tx unit uses an optical transmitter to convert RF to Optical signal. The Rx unit converts it back to RF signal. The two units are connected through the customer’s single mode fiber.

The RFoF links are designed to offer a low noise figure by integrating a built-in LNA in the transmitter and post amplifier in the receiver for these low level signals. A built-in bias-T is also available to power an additional front-end if necessary. The module is offered as RFoF in a compact aluminum case for indoor applications and in suitable outdoor enclosures.

The RFoF modules have a relatively high gain (about 40dB) with excellent gain flatness, and a low noise figure (thanks to the integrated LNA in the transmitter), and high SFDR. In addition, their power consumption is relatively low. The standard optical connector is FC/APC, with SC/APC being available upon request.

Getting Close Up and Personal with RFOptic’s Next Generation Programmable RFoF Solutions

Programmable RFoF units – Bidirectional
Programmable RFoF units – Bidirectional

Earlier this year, RFOptic has launched its next-generation programmable RFoF solutions. They come in three versions that operate from 500 kilohertz up to 2.5GHz, 3GHz and 6GHz. A version with Bias-T that supports GPS applications is also available. In the video below, you can see that all versions have the same small form factor.

Let’s have a closer look at all the components that make up an RFoF set. Each set is made of Tx and Rx modules, 2 AC/DC adapters, fiber patch cable, 2 USB cables, and a USB drive.

  • The T-module is used to convert radio frequency signals (that are input) to converter, to optical signal.
  • The Tx module at the far end, is used to take in the fiber signal, optical signals, and output the RF signals.
  • The patch cable is provided so that the user can test the units before a field deployment in their labs.
  • The 3 USB cables are provided so that the user can simultaneously connect to both of the units from the data connectors.

The user interface allows the capability to connect to both of the devices at the same time. Through this interface, the user can set up and modify the S21 system gain, the P1dB compression point, as well as few other parameters such as optical power, LED indication and module information – either locally or remotely.

Furthermore, the RFoF link has full diagnostic capability including Tx, Rx and complete link test (Optical and RF). All these do not only save test equipment costs, but also provide real-time diagnostic of deployed links.
